892e7924ae4f7f74b0e6697e8aa729e5Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving! What are you up to the rest of the holiday weekend? We hosted Thanksgiving yesterday so I am looking forward to a lazy day. I usually go shopping on Black Friday – not the crazy wake up at 3am shopping, but still braving the crowds mid morning. This year it has been nice to forgo the craziness and really take a day off with no schedule or running around. I am also excited to start putting up Christmas decorations… it is already less than a month away! Have a great weekend and here are some link from around the web…

Women before 10am // Inspiring Modern Women – Kari

In this series we are speaking to inspiring modern women and having them share their morning rituals and secrets with us. Here is a glimpse into how Kari is creating a life following passion rather than fear. women_before_10_jalunewomen_10am_jalune_kari_3

Tell us about yourself.

I live in Highland Park, Los Angeles in a breezy refurbished 1925 bungalow with my old fat cat, Calvin, and I am in one of the biggest transition periods of my life. I had been a bartender for almost 13 years when in June, I came to the end of my rope, both mentally and physically; I was exhausted all the time and beginning to grow jowls out of unhappiness. I was the classic example of workplace burnout – committed to my job out of fear rather than passion. I set out to survey the possibilities and forge a new path for my life; right now I am a research and fact checking intern with L.A. Magazine and I teach Pilates, but next month I may be a casting assistant on a feature film or an extra in a commercial. I am going where my interests take me and I am trying not to worry about the ever imminent financials that will cause me to make a decision sooner rather than later, but in the meantime, I am enjoying the newfound freedom of choice. We always have a choice. Isn’t that liberating?

 

What time do you wake up in the morning?

I do not have a consistent waking hour. Sometimes I am up at 6am, sometimes 9am. Depends on the day. However, I consistently press snooze and lay in bed negotiating what I can cut out of the morning routine to gain 5 more minutes in bed. Soon after the alarm my cat, Calvin, wants food and will not be denied, so I get up, feed him, and thus my day begins.

 

What’s your coffee / coffee drink of choice?

I am all over the place with my coffee drinks, which is to say I have no go-to. One day it’s an Americano, the next a Cappuccino or (gasp!) no coffee at all. Sometimes I get down with an unsweetened matcha green tea with a little almond milk. Yum!

What’s been a favorite or coveted place of yours to enjoy a cup of coffee?

Last year when my friend Sara had her baby, I loved going over to her house to drink the rest of her pour over coffee and chat while the baby slept.

 

What’s the last thing that inspired you?

This quote: “All things are just as you make them” – Plautus

What’s a favorite morning beauty, food, or get moving tip you may have?

I have hot water with lemon and a touch of honey every morning, first thing. My body craves it and it kick starts my digestive system.

How do you relax/take time for yourself daily?

I try to get in a little Pilates mat work, even if only 5 minutes. Pilates helps me to check in with my breath and my body as a whole — feel where I am holding tension — and release it through breath.

 

What does your ideal day of rest look like?

It would be a day at an old world spa with no gadgets, a nap, a nice long walk, massage and body scrub followed by sauna and cold water alternations and bed at 9pm.

Coffee Talk

coffee_talk_jaluneCoffee is synonymous with conversation and since we cannot not have a cup together in person, we started this series to share our current ponderings as the next closest thing. So pour yourself a cup of coffee and join us for some coffee talk – we would love to hear about what is going on with you as well as tell you what has been on our minds lately.

 

It is a short week, making this Monday that much better. We have some exciting things happening over here this week and cannot wait to share them with you! But just to back track a little, as we told you about in our announcement post, our blog is all about exploring and sharing ways to bring balance to daily life and creating rituals of rest. Today we wanted to share our story about what inspired us to create Jalune and to establish Journal de Jalune as a sanctuary of beauty, comfort, and style.

Our story is simple. We are two sisters, Jessica and I (Hillary), who always shared a passion for fashion, art, music, food, and coffee (so much coffee).

 

While Jessica was shopping for a client one day and frustrated again by the lack of loungewear & pjs offered for women, it hit her. Calling me right away, an epic phone call about what available and the lack of modern, flattering, and comfortable loungewear lead us to the realization that we would have to do this ourselves to do it right. There was no one-stop shop consistently delivering in this area and we realized we wanted to be that shop. This was our A-Ha moment, as our spiritual guru Oprah calls it, that perfect idea to change the course of our creative lives. Many many cups of coffee since, we perfected our vision and Jalune came to be.

 

Addressing the modern burden to be healthy, aware, and generous daily, we desired an authentic ritual for rest. For these important moments of sleeping, relaxing, and lounging – we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between style and comfort. After speaking with many women across all ages, careers, and interests who felt the same way, it was clear there was a need to provide a consistent, non-seasonal lifestyle brand and one that is made in the US.

 

We wanted to bring our movement for a beautiful rest online as Journal de Jalune, creating content that addresses the modern woman’s spiritual and healthy growth to feel beautiful inside and out. We look to fill that gap with our blog content and would love to hear what inspires you. What topics you would like to hear more about on Journal de Jalune? Five for Friday

I am finishing up my last week of yoga teacher training which I have loved every part of it – but I am secretly (well not so secretly) excited to have weekend mornings back to sleep in and head to impromptu brunches with friends. Besides the training, I am looking forward to a low key weekend of catching up on my DVR and Thanksgiving recipe planning (i.e. giving pinterest hours of my life) before the official holiday season begins next week! healthy maple pecan granola

maple_pecan_granola_2Breakfast has to be my favorite meal of the day. I usually gravitate towards eggs for breakfast, but sometimes I just need something sweet. Granola is always a go to for this, but I never like how much added sugar the store bought brands have– and seriously, who ever sticks to their suggested 1/4 cup portion size?? This easy maple pecan granola recipe uses natural sugars from maple syrup and applesauce so I can eat a bowlful (or 2) without the sugar rush! Hope you enjoy it! Do you enjoy a savory or sweet breakfast?

3 cups rolled oats

1 cup chopped raw pecans*

1/3 cup maple syrup

1/4 cup applesauce

1/2 cup dried cranberries*

1/2 cup coconut flakes*

2 T milk (almond milk, soy, etc.)

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp salt

* feel free to switch up the nuts and dried fruits, the combinations are endless!

 

 

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

Mix all of the dry ingredients except the dried fruits (cranberries and coconut) in a large bowl.  In a small bowl, add all of the wet ingredients and stir well.

Add the wet mix to the dry ingredients and stir until everything is evenly coated

Spread the granola onto a baking sheet in a thin layer (may require more than one pan) and bake for 15 minutes.

At 15 minutes, pull the pans out and stir granole. Return to the oven for another 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and transfer to a large bowl. Mix in your dried fruits and enjoy!

sleepy-time yoga

Somehow we are just about a week from Thanksgiving, time seems to be flying by! This time of year is inherently stressful and busy for me, and I am sure a lot of you can relate. There are those end of the year projects at work to wrap up, the shopping list for the holidays, planning for travel, the list goes on. When I get stressed, the first thing I notice is that I have a harder time falling asleep because my mind will not turn off. As we have talked about before, there are many things you can do to help yourself fall asleep faster, but one of my go-tos lately has been doing yoga before bed – well actually IN bed! It is not some elaborate yoga sequence, but rather a few poses that helps stretch and relax the body and mind, all from the comfort of your own bed (you can still do them on a mat if you’d like). Check them out below if you would like! How do you unwind for bed when you are stressed?

seated forward fold (Paschimottanasana) – hold for 5 breaths

legs up the wall (Viparita Karani) – use a wall/headboard or put your pillow under your tailbone to elevate your legs – hold for 10 breaths

happy baby (Ananda Balasana)

supine twist (Supta Jaṭhara Parivartānāsana) – hold for 5 breaths on each side

butterfly (Supta Baddha Konasana) – place one hand on your belly and one on your heart – hold for 5 breaths

savasana – lay there until you fall asleep!

Holiday Spice Coffee

Hoilday Spice CoffeeIt is cold here in Colorado, not just a ‘I need a winter hat to go outside’ cold, more like ‘I need to cover every inch of exposed skin’ cold. Along with the cold came a foot of snow, both of which has had a profound side effect – I am officially in the holiday spirit! Bring on the egg nog and Christmas music! So now that I have been bitten by the bug, I wanted to share a recipe that is perfect for this time of year making each day a little more festive. This Holiday Spice Coffee is a great way to add a subtle spice to your everyday cup of coffee. It would also be a simple way to fancy-up coffee served with Thanksgiving pie or a Christmas brunch. Enjoy!

Hoilday Spice CoffeeHoliday Spice Coffee

Ingredients: 

2 tablespoons cinnamon

1/2 tablespoon nutmeg

1/2 tablespoon cloves

 

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a small bowl.

Add a  1/4 teaspoon of the spice mix per 1/8 cup coffee grounds before brewing or French pressing.
