In this series we are speaking to inspiring modern women and having them share their morning rituals and secrets with us. Meet Julie, an actor and event planner, and see how she finds time for herself in the mornings before her busy days in Brooklyn begin.

Tell us about yourself.

 

I split my time between being an actor and Event Planner while living in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. You can see my most recent web series BAD DATES here, and some of my film work in the movie Hollidaysburg now on Amazon and Netflix.

 

Every one of my days is a little different from the next.  When I’m not shooting or auditioning, I am executing and running events of all types including weddings, birthdays, and cookbook release promotional events. At Brooklyn staple restaurant Franny’s, I curate a series of collaborative dinners called the CELLAR SERIES, bringing local farmers, wine producers, and overall forward thinkers together. It’s the intersection of all of my favorite things: food, wine and people.

 

I am super into cooking, yoga, plants and surfing and being an Auntie. Over the last few years, I have become an avid solo traveler, which has been unbelievably rewarding.
 

What time do you wake up in the morning?

 

I wake up early.Typically before my alarm goes off at 8am, which I make sure to put ACROSS the room forcing me to get out of the coziness of bed. I usually chug a glass of water first thing and hazily check email and instagram. My apartment is flooded with light in the mornings and my plants could not be happier. I am a crazy plant lady. Seriously. I have about 30 green friends ranging from succulents and herbs to a 50 year old rubber tree. I spend a good 20 minutes shuffling around watering, pruning and attending to them all. Full disclosure- I even talk to them a little. “Don’t you look handsome today…” I told you crazy plant lady!

I try to make it to yoga or the gym, but if I can’t I’ll try to squeeze in an inversion and a few quiet minutes of a meditation before heading out into the craziness of this city. It makes a difference.
 

What’s your coffee / coffee drink of choice?

 

I love an Americano with cream. My local coffee shop Hungry Ghost really nails it.

What’s been a favorite or coveted place of yours to enjoy a cup of coffee?

 

I always try and make it home to Rhode Island a few times a summer, when my Dad’s vegetable garden is in full swing. There is something magical about getting up early, grabbing a cup of coffee, and following him barefoot and in my jammies out to the backyard. As he buzzes around showing me the cherokee heirlooms, the peas, the eggplant, I quietly sip and try and absorb his greenthumb-ness. He is really a master.

 

What’s the last thing that inspired you?

 

I took a trip to Greece this summer and my brain nearly exploded and my face hurt from smiling the whole time. The sea is dark and salty. The food- so bright and simple. Everything is white and blue and it feels so right. THE SANDALS YOU GUYS. I was blown away by all of the artisans, entire families who craft things by hand. I did my best to stimulate their economy and I bought all the fabric and sandals and jewelry and oregano that would fit in my suitcase.
 

What’s a favorite morning beauty, food, or get moving tip you may have?

 

I got hooked on smoothies a few years back, so I immediately get one going while I’m doing my early morning plant shuffle. My go-to is: 1/2 a frozen banana (frozen is clutch!), a handfull of torn kale, a handfull of mixed berries, a scoop or 2 of greek yogurt and a little iced white tea.

I wear Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution sunblock on my face year round. It’s super lightweight- I’m obsessed.

How do you relax/take time for yourself daily?

 

Cooking is a real stress reliever for me. I try and cook at home at least a few nights a week. I just did my annual end of summer massive hot pepper pickling! I use a wide assortment: jalapenos, scotch bonnets, new mex peppers, and even a few ghost peppers. The trick is having the right amount of sugar in the brine so they are sweet, but still have a kick. In the heart of winter I’ll smear some fresh ricotta on crusty bread and toss a few on top to stay warm.
 

What does your ideal day of rest look like?

 

I am a beach girl to the core, so to me beach days are the best days. In the summer I’ll take a good book, paddle ball and lots and lots of snacks and stay on the beach until the sun is going down. In the colder months, I’m perfectly happy spending a day at home, watching movies and cooking all day.
