Winter Warm Up Yoga

December 2, 2015

Now that it is December, the cold weather is in full swing in Colorado and my instincts are telling me to go into hibernation mode. I get cold easily, so any little tricks to warm me up are key to surviving winter. One of the easiest ways to generate heat is to get your body moving. Enter this super quick 10 minute yoga routine that can be done anytime you need a quick warm up, whether that be first thing in the morning or getting home after work to a cold dark house. Wind down with a warm cup of tea or hot chocolate after and you have the perfect winter warm up.

November 25, 2015

shop small // journal de jaluneWith the holiday approaching tomorrow, today can be full of travel, preparations, and wrapping up things at work. Amongst all of the chaos, we are looking forward to spending our holiday with loved ones and reflecting on what we are thankful for on a daily basis. And while it may seem hard with the stress of the holidays, choosing to be grateful can actually make you happier, as written in this great New York Times article. We are thankful for being able to share and grow our business here with you. We hope you shop small this holiday season and we are happy to be a part of the Makers Mart pop-up event this Saturday, so if you are in the area please stop by! Thanks for going on this journey with us. Five for Friday

November 20, 2015

five for friday // journal de jaluneHappy Friday! What do you have going on this weekend? I am in Seattle as we speak (or you read). I am looking forward to being surrounded by water, roaming around Pike Place Market, and riding the ferry to Bainbridge Island. Any recommendations for what to do/see/eat in Seattle? Have a lovely weekend and here are some links from around the web…

Holiday reading list

November 19, 2015

Holiday reading
As the chaos and fun of the holiday season officially begins, it can be hard to find moments to yourself amidst all the planning, prepping, and partying. Check out our post on surviving the holidays from last year for some great tips to get you through. One important thing is to remember to take time for yourself. A great way to have a moment away from it all is to escape in a good book, whether its while you wait for travel connections or to stop thinking of to-do lists as you wind down for bed. We are excited to read some of the books that came out this year featured on Oprah’s Best Books of 2015. First on our list is Patti Smith’s new memoir ‘M Train’. A quote about her newest book from O Magazine: ‘The book feels like a long, poetic letter directly from the brain of your smartest, oddest, bravest friend, the one who has ventured so much further than most of us dare to. ” Cannot wait to dive in!
What are you reading now?

Meditation Inspiration

November 17, 2015

Meditation Inspiration // journal de jaluneAfter a heavy weekend like this last one, getting back into the daily grind can seem a lot harder. Fitting in a short meditation in the am or pm can help you reboot and shift negative energy into positive energy. If you have never meditated before or it’s been a while, check out our post about Demystifying Meditation for some great tips. The Chopra Center has a number of different free guided meditations in varying length as well that are great to help ease yourself into a meditation practice. Taking just a few moments to completely disconnect and reconnect to a deeper sense of self can help to calm your mind when feeling overwhelmed or stressed. I did the Gratitude Meditation this morning and feel much more centered today than I have in the past few days. Do you have a daily meditation practice?

Design Ideas // Winter Branches

November 12, 2015

It has been cold and blustery here in Colorado the last couple days causing the last of the leaves to be blown away. Now that the trees branches are bare, it is really starting to feel like winter is right around the corner. Wanting to bring some of the outdoors inside as it gets colder, I have been inspired by these bare branches and how easily they can turn into rustic art. Using branches as decor add a sense of warmth to your house (plus it is eco-friendly and cheap!). Here are some inspiring ways I came across to decorate with branches if you’d like to see!

Pumpkin Mushroom Risotto

November 10, 2015

Pumpkin Mushroom Risotto_1As we mentioned last week, this time of year comes with craving warm comfort food with seasonal ingredients. Pumpkin is still in season and is, of course, on of the top of my list for go-to fall recipes, from beverages to baked goods to main courses. When I first made this savory risotto, I knew it was going to be in heavy dinner rotation after my boyfriend went for seconds. This hearty dish is so easy to make and the mild pumpkin flavor and mushrooms are a perfect pair. This dish would work great as a Thanksgiving side dish or on its own as a filling vegetarian meal. Pair with some pumpkin beer and enjoy!

Pumpkin Mushroom RisottoIngredients:

1 cup short grain brown rice (sprouted works well too)
1 3/4 cup vegetable broth
1 tsp olive oil
8 oz container of mushrooms, sliced thin (I like crimini)
1/2 sweet onion diced
2 tbsp chopped fresh sage
1/2 cup pumpkin purée
1/4 grated Parmesan cheese
Salt & pepper to taste

Pour rice and broth in a medium sized pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and let cook for 45 minutes. Remove from heat, keep covered, and let stand for 10 minutes.

While rice is cooking, heat a skillet to medium low and add olive oil. Add mushrooms, onions, sage, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for 10 minutes or until soft and set aside.

When rice is finished combine add pumpkin, parmesan cheese, and mushroom mix to the pot, stir until combined.
