In this series we are speaking to inspiring modern women and having them share their morning rituals and secrets with us. Meet Adina, founder of S.W. Basics, and author of the book Skin Cleanse, and see how she takes a less is more approach to her beauty routine.
Tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Adina, a holistic nutritionist, founder of the company S.W. Basics, and author of the book Skin Cleanse. I’m from South Florida, but these days I spend way too much time in Brooklyn, NY. (Code for: I never leave and have forgotten what Manhattan is even like…)
What time do you wake up in the morning?
Allow me to begin with my excuse. I do my best work from 11pm to 1 or 2am. I swear. So, my wakeup time is really late. Unless I have a meeting it’s 9/9:30. My habits are even worse. I start by checking my texts, email, and instagram. After panicking over something or another and taking it out on my husband and biz partner Adam, I feel calmer. That’s when I read The Skimm and drink coffee or a protein shake. Then I get ready in a flat 5 minutes and we leave for the office at 10.
What’s your coffee / coffee drink of choice?
An iced soy latte, year round.
What’s been a favorite or coveted place of yours to enjoy a cup of coffee?
We’re lucky to have an amazing coffee shop right on our block, Cup. I have yet to find a coffee I like more than theirs.
What’s the last thing that inspired you?
This article about Ivanka Trump. Allow me to brag and say I’ve met her, and she’s amazing.
What’s a favorite morning beauty, food, or get moving tip you may have?
Every morning I was my face only with water, nothing else, and then I pat dry. Whether or not I plan on wearing makeup, it’s hands down the best thing I’ve ever done for my skin. Currently I’m using the deodorant cream from the book, and I slather myself in some crazy combo of grapeseed oil, avocado oil, and sesame oil every time I shower (I have different samples I’ve made of it all around my house). Or I’ll scrub down with our hibiscus mask and then soak in the tub, letting it fill the water.
How do you relax/take time for yourself daily?
I’m a streaming junkie. I know people say this is not a good way to relax, but for me it really is. I’m obsessed with watching nothing except one show until I’m totally through it. As far as self-care, nothing beats working out. I try to make time for it every day, even if it’s only 20-30 minutes.
What does your ideal day of rest look like?
Well I bet you can guess I’d be streaming something. Probably after going to the park and the farmers market. But we have an incredibly comfortable couch that my mom gifted us because she knew we needed it. So I’d probably lay around all day reading and watching some terrible show from start to finish.
