In this series we are speaking to inspiring modern women and having them share their morning rituals and secrets with us. Meet Jen, an artist’s studio manager, and see how she carves out her coveted coffee time amidst her busy days.
Tell us about yourself.
I live in Long Island City (New York), with my darling husband, on a lovely tree-lined block. When we’re not working, we spend most of our time laughing and driving around town listening to old time radio with the windows down. It’s pretty magical.
My day-to-day is spent managing two separate artist studios in Brooklyn, NY for two incredibly amazing artists. One of the artists is a painter and my husband, Chris Uphues www.chrisuphues.com and the other is a sculptor and LEGO Certified Professional, his name is Sean Kenney www.seankenney.com.
What time do you wake up in the morning?
I set the alarm for 7:10am, but it takes a snooze or two to get me motivated. Our room is super sunny in the morning so it’s not so terrible getting up. Once my eyes are open, I check my social apps (@jenkoehl), Chris’s social apps (@chrisuphues), my five email accounts, then turn on sirius radio and make coffee. I check the weather and turn up the volume on my phone so I can hear the Howard Stern show while I’m in the shower for a solid 10-15 minutes. I go through my skincare routine (all S.W. Basics), dry my hair, add a little mascara and concealer, and then I finally get dressed. If I can do all of this before 8:30a, I grab two cups of coffee and crawl back into bed to hang with Chris until about 9am. By 9:15am, I’m out the door and hopping on the G train… WHEW!
What’s your coffee / coffee drink of choice?
I live for chocolatey, rich coffee with just a pinch of half and half. My preference is Leftist from Gimme Coffee. I’m addicted. I can’t stop!
What’s been a favorite or coveted place of yours to enjoy a cup of coffee
There’s no better place in the world to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee than in my bed, with my husb, on a saturday morning… Windows open.
What’s the last thing that inspired you
What’s a favorite morning beauty, food, or get moving tip you may have?
In the morning, if I’m feeling particularly low energy/puffy, I splash my face with extremely cold water, pat it mostly-dry (don’t rub), and then add my coconut oil-based cream. The cold water is incredibly miserable but if you can suffer through it, it makes a HUGE difference. Your skin looks immediately refreshed, the puffiness is reduced, and if you keep your skin a little damp when you put on your cream, it helps to keep your skin nice and supple. Another tip… Let your cream set for at least a minute before adding makeup and if you wear foundation, let that set for about two minutes before you brush on your blush. Everything will look much smoother and natural.
How do you relax/take time for yourself daily?
Chris and I unwind every evening together. We try to keep it pretty quiet and calm by either listening to an old time radio show, watching an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, or just chatting. We like to spend a few minutes together in the morning as well, just some quiet coffee time. Those are the moments that make me the happiest and most relaxed.
What does your ideal day of rest look like?
Waking up early, putting on a bathing suit, and spending most of the day next-to and in a pool. Lots of sunshine, a stack of magazines, never ending coffee, and a well-behaved puppy by my side. No phones. No computer.
