Tell us about yourself.

I am a filmmaker and actor living in Los Angeles, originally from Northern Virginia. Some of my work can be found here: http://katpurgal.com and here: http://www.youtube.com/c/taninwinter

What time do you wake up in the morning?

I wake up around 7AM, which was originally only supposed to be a Monday thru Friday thing, but has become a Saturday and Sunday routine as well. I can’t sleep in anymore! Sadly. I start hot water for some drip brew, let the pup outside & feed him. While the hot water boils, I either water the plants, put dishes away, or fold laundry. I love starting my day off that way, sort of fresh and tidy, a clean slate before my brain actually wakes up.

What’s your coffee / coffee drink of choice?

There’s nothing like a hot pot of coffee to wake you up. Trader Joe’s has some really great economical options. “Bali Blue Moon” is my favorite but we usually buy “Joe.”  Since it’s been so hot this summer, any left over coffee I save for a post-lunch iced coffee. And when I’m feeling splurgy, I hit up Paper Or Plastik Cafe for a lowfat iced latte.

What’s been a favorite or coveted place of yours to enjoy a cup of coffee?

At our dining room table of course! We never had one until we moved into the current apartment we live in, so it’s sort of a quaint privilege. My husband and I purchased it from the Rose Bowl Flea Market and re-upholstered the chairs that came with it, bought the materials in the fashion district in Downtown LA, staple gun and everything!

What’s the last thing that inspired you?

The last thing that inspired me was the film “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon about a boy who makes films for fun that befriends a dying girl and he ends up making a film for her. It’s really stunning visually. You can tell it was for filmmakers by filmmakers; done with a lot of love.

What’s a favorite morning beauty, food, or get moving tips you may have?

Morning showers are my jam.

How do you relax/take time for yourself daily?

Calm.com is a really great app to get you centered.  It’s been really valuable to me before or after auditions, to get centered and back to myself. I’m really bad at self-motivating so having a guided meditation really works for me.

What does your ideal day of rest look like?

Either a day binge-watching great movies/TV on the couch or a day of taking photos. Photography for me is so relaxing because I can be in charge of my visuals, with no one directing me and no pressure from the outside to output.  I live and die on visuals.
